Artist Spotlight: Emily Burns

‘The one thing that will make you stand out and be noticed, is not following the blueprint and making your own rules. No one can be you like you can be.’

Tell us a bit about yourself

My name’s Emily Burns, I’m a singer/songwriter/artist type person, living in London, originally from Scotland and usually touring around everywhere else playing my music …

What inspires your music?

My songs are all inspired by real experiences that I have, so I always say that releasing a song for me, is like opening up my diary for everyone to have a good read through. It can be pretty daunting and sometimes makes me feel a little vulnerable but I love it, it’s like a weird thrill.

3. What has been the most fulfilling project you've worked on?

I’m super proud of all the music I’ve released but I have a collaboration coming out soon, that is probably the best thing I’ve ever made … I know that’s a really annoying answer but eeeeeeeek it’ll be worth the wait 👀

4. Have you always known you wanted to be a singer? When did you know this was what you wanted to do?

I’ve known from a really young age that I wanted to sing… probably around 5 (!?) I can remember standing on a box in a market stall, belting out Macy Gray “I Try” at the top of my lungs and having a craving to perform ever since haha. I guess I was around 15 before I started considering music seriously as a career. I recorded some rough demos of songs I’d written, sent them to local radio stations and couldn’t believe it when they started playing me. That’s when I allowed myself to start dreaming a bit bigger.

5. What advice do you have for aspiring artists trying to get into the music industry?

The best advice I’ve ever received is just to be unequivocally yourself, always. When I started out in music, I kept trying to sound like and look like other artists that I looked up to, because I thought that was what you had to do to be successful. But the one thing that will make you stand out and be noticed, is not following the blueprint and making your own rules. No one can be you like you can be.

6. Where can we listen to your music? It needs to be heard! 🧡

You can listen to my new EP “I Love You, You’re The Worst” and the rest of my tracks on all platforms… Spotify, Apple, Youtube etc. I feel like I have a good range of songs you can dance to and cry to, so dependant on your mood, I’ve got your back 😉
